Fancy Red Diamonds
Of all the rare diamonds on earth the truest of the rare is red. Intense and dramatic, the price per carat can reach upwards to 2MM for a fancy Intense, and not necessarily flawless. The Argyle mine produces such a small amount of these diamonds per year, and the bids on these diamonds is so intense, that only the very capable can procure for their clientele. From a mine to be closed in a few years, no one really knows what makes them this color for this region of the world. While the Argyle mines produces a few score of these diamonds per year, an interesting historical fact is that there is in existence a truly intense red diamond from Brazil.
Named “ Rob Red “ Diamond after its finder, it is the most saturated and purest red diamond measured visually and instrumentally to date in the world. The 0.59-carat pear-shape Rob Red deserves the title of Fancy Intense Red, nothing exceeds the purity and saturation of the Rob Red also the most saturated red diamond ever recorded with a modern instrument. This diamond is also quite unique because it is relatively free of inclusions, being VS1 clarity; hence it is one of the 'cleanest' red diamonds in existence.
After careful examination by other diamond experts, this stone has the potential to be labeled by the world's colored diamond collectors and connoisseurs as the most important red diamond on earth. It is an alluvial diamond, or a diamond that was found in ancient river deposits. Compared to the Argyle mines which reap their reds and pinks from a volcanic “pipe”, only one of these specific types of deep red diamonds has been found in Brazil to date.
